John Wesley traveled two hundred and fifty thousand miles on horseback, averaging twenty miles a day for forty years; preached forty thousand sermons; produced four hundred books; knew ten languages. At eighty-three he was annoyed that he could not write more than fifteen hours a day without hurting his eyes, and at eighty-six he was ashamed he could not preach more than twice a day. He complained in his diary that there was an increasing tendency to lie in bed until 5:30 in the morning.
The above is a challenge to the present generation. People are always looking for the easy job, top pay for shorter hours, more benefits and less labor. Solomon, in Proverbs 13:11, deals with the matter of sloth. "Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished; but he that gathereth by labor shall increase."
Frivolous and expensive pursuits, empty amusements, and vain show of dress and occupation with the abundance of possessions leads to emptiness. Our energies must be used for those things which are eternal and worth while.
The Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 12:11 , "Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord." Only one life 'twill soon be passed, only what's done for Christ will last.
